Wired!

When we moved into the house there were these ugly discs covering unused electrical boxes on each side of the fireplace and the fixtures that used to hang there were all beaten up and trashed in the garage. I was so glad they hadn't thrown them out because they were the original 1930's sconces that were hanging when the house was built. So this past weekend I finally finished my restoration project and wired them up, and they look so great! Here is how I did it...

These are what the fixtures looked like sitting in the garage. I removed the old broken sockets and cloth wrapped wires, cleaned the sconces and used paint stripper to remove the old paint. Scrubbed off rust with steel wool, dried them in the oven and sealed with clear satin Rustoleum spray lacquer.

Assembled the fixture and polished the brass. The small center caps for mounting were lost so I bought new ones and spray painted them with metallic paint to match.

Bought replacement lamp sockets and new wire. Attached wires to socket (black to hot brass screw, white to neutral silver screw) and left the wires about 8"long.

Inserted sockets in sconces, threaded wire to back of fixture. Stripped 1/4" off the ends of the wires.

Stopped to feed the baby.

Turned off the power at the circuit breaker and tested wires with a voltage meter to make sure it was really off. Secured mounting crossbar to box in the wall.

Now the fun part: wrapped fixture wire ends lightly around wall wire ends, hot to hot, neutral to neutral. Screwed the plastic cap onto both wire ends securely.

Secured fixture with cap fastener at center.

Flipped on the circuit breaker, added a bulb and beaded shade and now we have antique sconces that were part of the original house. I spent about $25 fixing them up.
