Beatlemania

My child has Beatlemania. Bad. She has a Yellow Submarine picture book that she has become obsessed with over the past month. It goes everywhere with her. It has been to "Show and Tell" three times already, and preschool only started last week. She moons over Paul in particular. I catch her lying on the floor with her cheek pressed against the page with him on it, smooching him - for a half hour straight. Sometimes she just falls asleep with her face glued to it. She would watch the movie every day if I let her.

So since she remembers that I once made her a Joey Ramone doll, she asked me "can you make me a Paul doll, so I can hug him?" and when I did, what happened was so ridiculous...

Exhibit A: The Book
Evie

Exhibit B: The Doll
I scanned the book art, modified it and then fused it as an iron-on transfer to some scrap wool gabardine and stuffed it. The backside is a groovy old orange floral 1970's pillowcase scrap.

I presented Evie with the doll and she freaked out. She blushed and ran and hid her face in the carpet.

Her little friend Sarah was over and tried to snap her out of her lovestruck state: "Come on Evie! Lets play! Are you OK?"
As you can see, Ping the Pug was worried too (though she always looks pretty worried.)

After a few minutes Sarah gave up and played with baby sister instead. Evie just stayed glued to the carpet giggling. This went on for a good 15 minutes.

I eventually picked her up and put her on the sofa so she would be more comfortable...

but she was back on the carpet in a few minutes. She stayed there for about a half hour.
That is the Paul doll's psychedelic flowery backside on her left.

And now when I show her the doll she runs away screaming and laughing and hides behind a plant or under her bed. Ah, young love. I wish it was John or George she was into though. Maybe she'll snap out of it if I play some [gag] Wings for her.

wow - both of my two did their Yellow Submarine stage. Started out with the cd (cause I was sick to death of kids music), bought the book and then graduated to the movie. I can't tell you how many times they have watched it. C is a huge beatles fan, and I'm sorry to say that the Paul fascination is there as well but I think that is an age thing. Once the teenage years really get going and she starts to get cynical she'll appreciate the depth of John instead of the sickly poppy sweet love songs of Paul.

A couple of years ago I found all of the figures from the movie - think it was 8 sets total. Then I had to buy them a second time because the kids played so much with the first (and they aren't really meant for playing) that pieces went missing.

Just lovely. I bumped into this page whilst suffering from a deeply unpleasent hangover (post 8 hour booze and curry stint) and it lifted my day. Nothing heals like laughing. I'm also pretty impressed by the notion of a Joey Ramone doll. You are (and have) an uber cool family!
